Set on the spectacular coast of central California, the Monterey Conference Center is located in the heart of historic downtown Monterey. The Monterey Conference Center opened April 30, 1977 and quickly became an important economic engine for the growth of the hospitality and tourism industries in the City of Monterey and Monterey County. The Monterey City Council authorized renovation of the Conference Center in 2013 based on a study by experts in the field. The City hired Ausonio, Inc., a local firm, for project management services in August 2014, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLC for architectural and engineering services in October 2014.
The project will be financed by a bond.
Monterey’s hospitality industry generates nearly $16 million annually in hotel tax revenue for the City. The City allocates 16% of the hotel taxes to its Neighborhood Improvement Program for improvements to playgrounds, parks, community centers, the Monterey Public Library, the Monterey Sports Center, and beautification projects in the neighborhoods. The City has held more than 15 public meetings on the Conference Center renovation project and made over 50 presentations to neighborhood associations, business associations, hospitality associations and community leaders.
